Search Engine Optimisation

Search Engine Optimisation or SEO is a process that improves the visibility of a Website or web page on search engines and therefore increases the traffic of the Website.

As people would generally click the first Website shown on a search engine as they would believe that would be the most relevant to what they have searched.

Search engines browse the web looking for particular text to find the most relevant web page to what you have searched.

Also known as spiders, these spiders search through web pages by following links and indexing everything they find, as there are so many pages on the web it is impossible for a spider to visit a site everyday to see if there is anything new or if it has been modified, sometimes spiders may not even visit your Website for months.

The whole reason a spider indexes web pages is so the information is stored in a giant database, so it can be retrieved later. The reason this is done is so that the indexed words and expressions that would best describe the page are assigned as the search strings.

You can get higher rankings by optimising your web pages to help the spiders classify your pages correctly and get the correct meaning of your web page.

So when someone uses a search engine, the search engine processes it by comparing the request to the indexed pages in the database. It is more than likely that it is more than just one page so the search engine starts to calculate the relevancy of the pages to the index with the search string.

Different search engines use various algorithms, these algorithms have different weights for common factors like links, Meta tags and keywords. All major search engines periodically change their algorithms, so if you want to stay at the top of a search list you would need to adapt your pages to the changes so it would be a good idea to devote permanent efforts towards Search Engine Optimisation.

After the search engine has indexed, processed and calculated the relevancy, all it has left to do is retrieve the results which is basically displaying the results on endless search engine pages from the most relevant to the least.

There are however some differences between different types of search engines and how they sort the relevance or the primary importance of certain factors like keywords or how old the site is, so if you plan to conquer more than just one of them you will need to optimize carefully to fully improve your Search Engine Optimisation in all search engines.
